Description

The activist daughter of a U.S. senator has been kidnapped, vanishing into the dark heart of a lawless, oil-rich nation. Her fate has become the concern of governments and multinational corporations jockeying for power in the area. But only one American, Lt. Col. Evan Burton, has the courage and the local experience to track down Kelly Trost.

Disillusioned by the cruelty of other men's wars and by the cynicism of his own government, Burton is prepared to hang up his uniform when the fate of one young woman calls him back to duty. It will prove to be the most difficult and brutal mission of his career, as he searches for her amid the chaos of a war-torn country controlled by gangsters, religious zealots, warlords, oil executives, mutinous generals and foreign spies. For an innocent has become a bargaining chip in a cold and ruthless global game.

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
Peters's creation offers multinational politics, greed, cruelty, and manipulation as the former Soviet republics strive to test their wings. Young American idealist Kelly Trost, daughter of a U.S. senator, volunteers in this treacherous region until she's kidnapped. Few have the resources to help before it's too late. Narrator Edward Lewis does a splendid job with the HUGE variety of accents. He successfully blends the brash with unexpected appearances of sensitivity. As the badly injured Kelly seeks help, the listener overhears sounds of excruciating pain and internal pep talks that keep her fighting for survival. Good "escapist" reading gives us the chance to glimpse far-away places. S.G.B. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine

Wall Street Journal...
[A] satisfyingly extravagant portrait of the country...cracklingly intelligent writing, a well-chiseled plot, and a taste of what's at stake in the Caucasus.
